From "Short Walks From Essex Pubs" (1996) by Norman Skinner:
"The pub, which once a farmhouse, was created to assist with the changing of horses on the Norwich to London coach. Originally known as the Rainbow, it's present name stems from the fact that there was once a bush in the forecourt cut in the shape of a dove."
