The London, Essex, Kent, Middlesex, Surrey, Suffolk & Herts Directory - including Historical Pubs, in the South East of England

Do you want to purchase the londonpublichouse.com web site name? All my business is moving to deadpubs.co.uk and the OLD site name is FOR SALE. This is because lunarpages.com have deleted my site three times in as many months, so I am moving the sites to an UK provider.

Garland Hotel, Garland Road, Parkeston

"I have an interest in the history of Parkeston - the village adjacent the quay. It was built in 1883. There is one pub, the Garland Hotel, 65 Garland Road, Parkeston CO12 4PA, now re-named The Captain Fryatt. The first name comes from Squire Garland (could be Edgar or his son Arthur) who sold the land to the GER to build the Quay and village. Captain Fryatt was Master of the S.S. BRUSSELS. In 1915 whilst sailing from Parkeston to Rotterdam his ship was accosted by U33 near the Maas Lightship. Fryatt disregarded the signal to stop and steered straight for the submarine which escaped by diving. In 1916, steaming back to England from the Hook of Holland the BRUSSELS was captured by a torpedo-boat flotilla and taken to Zeebrugge. Fryatt was tried by the Germans for his action and shot the same day. In his War Memoirs Lloyd George describes how the Entente Powers responded to President Wilson's peace appeal in late 1916. The answer exemplifies German war atrocities and mentions two names: Miss Cavell and Captain Fryatt. In 1907 an assembly room and offices were added to the Garland Hotel (from planning records)"

I get hundreds of emails every day, fortunately most 'spam mails' are deleted by my mail scan settings. The final emails are delivered to various email addresses, and replying to these are not always successful. If you do not hear from me in a timely fashion, please feel free to email again, I do not mind! This is a pure PUBS history site, I doubt if I know where the PUBS are NOW, but try the site for where they were a hundred years ago, again enjoy!
